Well, let's reverse that order, shall we?

Saw 2012 today with . It was surprisingly good, actually. The way the Earth came to hell in a hand basket made sense.

An increase in solar flare activity, detected in 2009, led to a dramatic increase of neutrinos that penetrated the Earth's surface and started to warm the core similar to a microwave; in one of the opening scenes, they were doing research in a mine that went down 12,000 feet, and found that an underground source of water 6000 feet down was boiling up to the level of the mine. That's not usually a good sign. The lead scientist then passes it along until it reaches the President, and then to the other major nations of the world. They then begin an evacuation plan for 2012 involving "ships" that cost 1,000,000,000 EUROS to buy ONE seat on.

Isn't the modern world so generous?

Then focus shifts on a chauffeur/published-book-writer Jackson Curtic. He's living by himself, and today, which is apparently *not* 12-21-12 (the "end of days ... according to the Mayan calender"), he's going to take his kids camping, who are living with his ex-wife Kate and her new husband, a plastic surgeon.

They go to camp in Yellowstone National Park, and that's when all hell starts to break loose.

To make a long story short, the destruction of the Earth comes much earlier than they had predicted those few years ago, the first blow being increased seismic activity in California and the east coast. As California sinks into the ocean and land sinks between the Earth's crust (which is why, in trailer, the ground seemed to be falling into an abyss - essentially, new canyons were forming), and they have to find a way to China, where the nations of the world have created 7 "Arcs" to last out the incoming floods. The family ends up making it, along with a Tibetan family consisting of a monk who last spoke with the Dali Lama (before his demise to a huge tidal wave), a worker who was to work on the Arc (under the guise that they were building a new "dam"), and their grandmother and grandfather.

Surprisingly, by the end, everyone makes it except for the plastic surgeon (who seemed like a jerk at first but turned out to be a nice guy), the Russian ex-boxer billionaire Jackson worked for (who sacrificed himself to get his two sons onto Arc #4), said billionaire's trophy girlfriend (but her dog survived!), and, you know, billions of people.

After the world floods over and ends the current world as they know it, they reset the calender to year 0001, and make it a few months before the waters start to recede (instead of the Himalayas being the only un-submerged land, parts of South Africa slowly appear), a sign that they can start human life anew.
